A Public Affair 8:30-9am: A discussion on this year’s Ebert Interruptus pick Sunrise (FW Murnau, 1927), with film critic Howie Movshovitz and host Sam Fuqua.
Sunrise, with Janet Gaynor and George O’Brien, is the story of a married man in a village who is led astray by a city woman who wants him to drown his wife. This in one of very few American stories in which people sick at heart go from the country to the city to be healed, instead of the reverse.
Murnau was German. He made the 1922 Nosferatu. He was brought to this country by the head of Fox to make a “European movie.” The film won “Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production” at the fist Oscar ceremony, and Janet Gaynor won Best Actress.
