Celebrating Mothers Day When Memories Fade

Mother’s Day can be a big family celebration but for the nearly 4 million women across the US who are living with Alzheimer’s disease, it can be a challenge for them and their families.

Amelia Schafer, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter says there are some things that families can to still celebrate the holiday while memories are fading.
Schafer advises families take a person-centered approach. Focus on what is enjoyable for the person with Alzheimer’s, such as looking at family pictures or enjoying the person’s favorite food. If they get
overwhelmed in large groups, a small, quiet gathering may be preferable.

She suggests not overdoing it, stick to the person’s normal routine as that will help keep the day from becoming disruptive or confusing. Depending on the person’s stamina, plan time for breaks so the person can rest in a quiet area away from noise and crowds.
