It’s 1938 in San Francisco. War is brewing around the world, but America’s entry into World War II is still several years away. Meanwhile, wannabe showgirls Grace, Helen, and Ruby are drawn to the thrill and glamour of Chinese nightclubs. These young women are the author’s China dolls.

This program originally aired on 2/27/2015. Lisa’s latest book, “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane,” tells the story of  Li-yan and her family who align their lives around the farming of tea in China’s Yunnan Province.
