Outsources: Mara Keisling on the State of Transgender Advocacy in 2017

Angela Palermo has a conversation with longtime transgender activist Mara Keisling. Mara founded the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) in 2003 and has served as its Executive Director since that time. She has led organizational and coalition efforts that have won significant advances in transgender equality, including the inclusion of gender identity in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the first-ever Congressional hearing on transgender issues, and countless federal administrative and state-level wins. During the interview, we discuss NCTE’s mission, the Gavin Grimm case, the Department of Justice’s removal of support for the transgender school guidelines, HB2 and other anti-trans laws/bills, the continuing spate of murders of trans women of color and advice for “travelling while trans.”
