Sand Creek Massacre memorial run arrives in Denver

On Sunday November 27th, hundreds of people gathered at the State Capitol to celebrate the conclusion of the 18th annual Sand Creek Massacre Run.

During the previous 4 days, about 200 members of the Northern and Southern Cheyenne nations and the Northern Arapaho nation traveled the 180 miles from Kiowa to Denver as they have done for the past 18 years.

The run commemorates the massacre of nearly 200 Native Americans by a volunteer militia from Denver on November 29, 1864. The run takes nearly the same path as that taken by the soldiers.

2014 marked the 150th anniversary of the massacre and saw Governor John Hickenlooper apologize on behalf of the state of Colorado for the Sand Creek Massacre.
