Join Angela Palermo for a conversation with Joy Ladin. Professor Ladin is a teacher, published essayist and poet, literary scholar and speaker on transgender issues who is currently serving as the David and Ruth Gottesman Chair in English at Stern College of Yeshiva University in New York City. She is the first openly transgender faculty member at an Orthodox Jewish institution. Professor Ladin is also the author of the 2012 trans memoir Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders.
During our conversation, we discuss Joy’s childhood and adolescent years in Upstate New York. And how growing up Jewish in a largely non-Jewish area prepared her, in an odd way, to come out as transgender. We also delve into her relationships with difficult father, her first wife and children, and her work-related “negotiations” around her gender transition at Yeshiva University.
