“Donald Trump is the walls candidate, he wants to build walls, he loves walls and the Pope is saying, no we need to build bridges.”
Jim Wallis is founder and President of Sojourners, a Christian organization that asks Christians to put “faith into action in the passionate pursuit of social justice, peace, and environmental stewardship, working in partnership with people of other perspectives, for the common good of communities, families and individuals.” Wallis has authored 12 books, and is a noted public theologian, speaker, and international commentator on ethics and public life. His latest book is America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege and the Bridge to a New America. Wallis recently wrote an opinion piece comparing Donald Trump and Pope Francis. “Donald Trump is the walls candidate, he wants to build walls, he loves walls and the Pope is saying, no we need to build bridges.”
Wallis says Trump is appealing to a certain (white) demographic which is fearful of losing power as country moves towards being majority minority. “In a couple of decades we’ll no longer be a white majority nation but a majority of minorities and the new generation wants to build that bridge, my kids want to build that bridge and we’re talking about how to do that but I think Donald Trump is really appealing to those that are afraid of that.”
Wallis says Donald Trump has become the white nationalist candidate “this is alarming. Building walls between his white followers and people of color. This is a serious message that he is offering and the pope has called him out.”
Jim Wallis will speak on America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege and the Bridge to a New America on Wednesday February 24th at 7pm at the Tattered Cover on Colfax Avenue in Denver.
