Thousands of people marched in the 2016 Denver Martin Luther King Marade on Jan 18, 2016.

Members of the Black Lives Matter movement used the event as an opportunity to raise awareness of the African Americans who have recently died while in police custody.

Protesters marched in front of the Marade carrying a banner that read “Marvin Booker and Michael Marshall,” the names of two black men who died while being restrained by deputies in Denver’s Downtown Detention Center.

Around 2,000 demonstrators heckled Mayor Michael Hancock during his speech accusing him of failing to hold accountable the sheriff’s deputies who restrained Michael Lee Marshall into unconsciousness last November, while Marshall was held in the Denver jail. Nine days later he died. His death was ruled a homicide by the city coroner.
