“It’s very significant because it’s a triumph of diplomacy over militarism. Those were the options and it’s pretty clear that military action was going to be taken against Iran.”

Congress is getting ready to vote on the Iran nuclear deal, with President Obama vowing to veto a resolution of disapproval. After almost two years of negotiations, the deal is being heralded as significant in diverting possible military action against Iran. David Barsamian, author of Targeting Iran, says that the deal is significant

“because it’s a triumph of diplomacy over militarism. Those were the options and it’s pretty clear that military action was going to be taken against Iran.”

Barsamian says that the US and Iran have a lot in common and that there is a dichotomy in the region with an Iranian that is clearly  hostile to the United States, but the 80 million people who live in the country are favorably inclined towards the United States.

“The US and Iran share common enemies such as ISIS, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, particularly in neighboring Pakistan.”
